This photograph is for my sister and her husband who gave me Beeker for my birthday; for my brother who gave me the Jameson’s thrice-distilled most-excellent whiskey, and all John Wayne fans everywhere, who have seen the movie “True Grit” often enough to understand the reference.

Guest photographer W.C. Nelson stopped off from his cruise down the Rhine River long enough to capture this appealing image from a Netherlands farmhouse. Color, color, the Dutch do color so very well.

This image is postcard-pretty, and had to be included in the images guest photographer W.C. Nelson allowed me to post. He’s currently sorting through several thousand images taken on a Rhine River cruise from Amsterdam to Zurich.

We’re waiting particularly for images of the Zurich swans, and the huge cask from the Heidelberg Castle.

Guest photographer W.C. Nelson, on a cruise down the Rhine from Amsterdam to Zurich, visited the Dutch Resistance Museum and took this photo of various implements and their shadows. He chose natural lighting and adjusted the ISO for this ethereal and oddly appealing affect.

Holland homes along the Rhine are beautifully colorful, often with white trim around the windows. The pond outside this home may not have been appealing for swimming but it gave a good canvas for the reflection of the windows in the home.

Guest photographer W.C. Nelson took a cruise down the Rhine and captured this near the beginning of the trip, somewhere in the Netherlands, not far from Amsterdam.

On a recent trip sailing down the Rhine from Amsterdam to Zurich, guest photographer W.C. Nelson captured one of the things that makes Holland unique: wooden shoes, in that delightfully-Hans-Brinker-style most of us recognize. The image seemed iconic and the colors lovely, so I asked him if I could post the photo into the gallery.

Scotland, My Scotland!

Every year Enumclaw, Washington, a town in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains and tucked up next to Mount Rainier hosts the annual Scottish Highland Games and Gathering of the Clans.

There are a thousand reasons to enjoy it, but the one thing that most exemplifies the joy of the event is that it is the only place I know of where people can drink as much as they like while carrying swords, knives, battle axes, and antique pistols.

I asked this fellow if he minded if I took his photograph, and he smiled and said “I don’t mind at all, I’m used to it.”

Fire In the Hole

Right before you throw a grenade, or drop the mortar into the tube, pull the lanyard on the 105 mm cannon, or light the fuse on the dynamite with which you are fishing, it is customary to yell “Fire In The Hole!” It means that something spectacular is about to happen. Prepare thyself.

This tomato, my first of the season, is about two days away from perfect ripeness, so “FIRE IN THE HOLE!”

Midway In the Mirror

The USS Midway museum sits next to Broadway Pier along the San Diego waterfront. This is a view looking inside the Pier headquarters building, if not quite Platonic, it at least mirrors the attempt.

The Broadway Pier is part of the downtown San Diego waterfront, next to the USS Midway museum pier. Tourists don’t go there for wildlife viewing, but the day I was there this fellow came strolling along the boardwalk, sat down, and gave me the redeye.

I haven’t had such an appealing invitation in years.
